RNP APCH / RNP

Required-Navigation Performance is and will be the basis for the future of Navigation.

  • Accuracy: track-keeping +/- 1RNP during 95% of the flight.
  • Lateral Containment:
Integrity: The probability that the Total System Error (TSE) of each aircraft operating in RNP airspace exceeds the specified cross track containment limit (2*RNP) without annunciation shall be less than 1*10-5 per flight hour.
Continuity: The probability of annunciated loss of RNP capability shall be less than 1*10-4 per flight hour.

Required Navigation Performance is a statement of the navigation performance accuracy, integrity, continuity and availability which are necessary for operations within a defined airspace.

RNP differs from RNAV by the additional requirement of on-board monitoring and alerting functions such as GPS PRIMARY loss alert.

For both RNAV 'X' and RNP 'X' designations: the ‘X’ value refers to the navigation accuracy in nautical miles that is expected to be achieved at least 95 percent of the flight time.
