Be Greener

RNP is one of the strategic features that allow airlines to achieve substantial economic benefits, while at the same time reducing the environmental impact of their operations. Saving fuel and therefore reducing carbon (CO2) emissions is one of the key driving factors for the development of RNP procedures. By allowing more direct tracks, every flight can become shorter.

It’s simple: Less flight time, less fuel burn.

Performance-based navigation (PBN) not only allows reducing in fuel costs, but also enables reducing noise and reducing emissions. Combined with the continuous descent approaches (CDA), the aircraft will simply be quieter in the approach phase. When flying into densely populated areas, designing approach and takeoff procedures using RNP allows an operator to avoid the most noise-sensitive areas. An aircraft will always make noise, but now the opportunity exists to control and operate an aircraft where it will have the least impact.

Benefits include:

  • 1 kg of fuel saved means 3.19 kg of CO2 emission
  • Optimized tracks for noise abatement.  RNP can avoid noise sensitive areas.
  • Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) on arrival procedure helps noise reduction and idle thrust use during descent instead of the traditional ‘dive and drive’ technique.
